Slow internet speed disrupts workflow

As internet traffic has surged during the coronavirus shutdown, netizens are complaining about the slow speed that impedes the uploading and downloading of data.

People who are carrying out office duties from home and those who are conducting video classes or holding meetings via the internet are now facing difficulties in what some said as, doing jobs that require more bandwidth.

Some universities and schools are offering online classes or sharing course materials through online platforms to make up the classes due to prolonged disruption in academic activities caused by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Many people, especially youth, who are engaged in outsourced data transfer jobs, and some others who offer tuition online, have a similar experience of slow Internet connectivity.

Stakeholders said slow internet is hurting online businesses that got a boost once the government asked people to stay at home to stop the coronavirus onslaught.

“Slower internet is having an impact on online business,” Chief Operating Office of e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) Jahangir Alam Shovon said.

He also mentioned that some online platforms informed them that they are facing the problem of slow internet.

We need to discuss the matter in an upcoming meeting with authorities concerned to find a solution, he added.

The country’s total internet connections stood at 99.984 million, of which 94.236 million come from mobile operators, according to a Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission report updated in February 2020.

The country now has 5.743 million active broadband connections.

Officially, Internet subscriber means subscribers/subscriptions who/that have accessed the Internet at least once in the preceding 90 days.
