AL nominates Ripon for Gaibandha-5 by-polls

The former president of the central committee of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Mahmud Hasan Ripon has received the nomination of Awami League for the by-election of Gaibandha-5 (Saghata-Phulchari) constituency.

He was the Central President of Chhatra League from 2006 to 2011.

The nomination was finalised at the joint meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina, of the Awami League's Parliamentary and Local Government People's Representative Nomination Board at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the PM, on Saturday (September 10).

A reliable source from the nomination board confirmed the matter to media. Ripon is currently a member of Awami League's sub-committee on relief and social welfare.

Awami League Member of Parliament for Gaibandha-5 Constituency and Deputy Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Fazle Rabbi Mia died on July 23 while undergoing treatment in the United States.

Then Election Commission declared the seat vacant. The by-election to the Gaibandha-5 constituency, comprising Fulchhari and Saghata, will be held on Oct 12. Electronic voting machines will be used in the polls instead of traditional ballot papers.

As per the election schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is Sept 13, while the date for scrutiny is Sept 15 and the last date for the withdrawal of candidature is Sept 22.
