Nayapaltan violenceCourt sends Fakhrul, Abbas to jail


A Dhaka court on Friday sent BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas to jail in a case filed over a clash that took place between the party men and police in Nayapaltan area of Dhaka on Wednesday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim passed the order after rejecting their bail petitions filed with the court by the defence lawyers this evening.

Earlier in the day Fakhrul and Abbas were shown arrested in a case filed with Paltan Police Station for planning and provoking attacks on the policemen.

Fakhrul was picked up from his Uttara residence while Abbas was from his Shahjahanpur house around 3:00 am.

On Wednesday, a Swechchasebak Dal leader was killed and a large number of people sustained injuries in a clash between police and BNP men in front of the party’s Nayapaltan central office ahead of its December 10 rally.

The police have filed three cases over the clash and arrested more than 500 BNP men and most of them were already in custody

Besides, several hundred unknown people have been accused in the lawsuits.

Following the clash, police raided the BNP office and arrested around 300 party leaders and activists from there.

On Thursday, a Dhaka court sent 445 BNP leaders and activists to jail in two cases filed over Wednesday's violence.

Party’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Dhaka south city unit convener Abdus Salam and Publication Secretary Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie were among the top leaders who were sent to jail, pending further legal procedures.
